Rotary Scholar of the Month for February: Alexis Jensen

Congratulations to Alexis Jensen, the Camas Washougal Rotary Scholar of the Month for February 2012. Alexis is a sophomore at Washougal High School, and has a 3.688 GPA. Jennifer Mahorney, her choir teacher, says "Alexis has been an outstanding contributor to the choir program at JMS and WHS." She notes that she "is a great role model for others when it comes to rehearsal discipline and commitment." Spanish teacher Rochelle Aiton describes Alexis as "cheerful, intelligent, and hardworking." She also says Alexis "comes into class with a smile on her face prepared to learn and work hard." English teacher Heather Carver describes Alexis as "always mindful of others' feelings but also willing to think for herself." Alexis is the daughter of Matthew and Jessica Jensen.

WSD teachers Marcia Hershaw and Lucie Willeman earn National Board Certification

Washougal School District teachers Marcia Hershaw and Lucia Willeman earned National Board certification this year. Marcia Hershaw is a Health and Fitness teacher at Hathaway Elementary. Lucia Willeman teaches third grade at Cape Horn-Skye Elementary. Certification is a one- to three-year-long introspective process that requires teachers to submit a four-part portfolio and a six-exercise content and pedagogy assessment. The four entries document a teacher’s success in the classroom as evidenced by his or her students’ learning. A national panel of peers then assesses the portfolio. “It was a highly reflective and analytical process that really helped me focus on the effect my instruction had on each child,” said Marcia Hershaw. “I assess student performance more frequently as a result, and shape future lessons to address areas that need to be strengthened.”

“Going through the National Board certification process was the most intense period of self-discovery and professional development that I have ever undergone,” said Lucie Willeman. “It was beneficial for not only myself, but my students as well as I have explored my own teaching practices and how they align with a set of stringent national teaching standards. This has helped refine my own classroom instruction and community building. Achieving the National Board Certification is definitely a life-time professional highlight.”

Considered the “gold standard” for teaching excellence, this year 6,200 teachers across the nation achieved this distinction. This brings the total number of board certified teachers in the U.S. to nearly 100,000.

A report by the National Research Council found that students who were taught by board certified teachers show higher gains on achievement tests than those taught by other teachers. National Board Certified Teachers must demonstrate advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices. Completion of the certification process signifies that teachers have developed and demonstrated the skills required of an accomplished professional educator.

The two newly certificated teachers join several other Washougal School District teachers, including: Brian Amundson, Penny Andrews, Scott Rainey, Heather Santos, Chelsea Waldron, and Bryn Walker.

Inherit the Wind Play at WHS Performing Arts Center February 10-18

Inherit the Wind, the classic 1950's courtroom drama by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee (not that one!) is coming to the Washburn Auditorium. Written during the height of the McCarthy trials of the 1950's, this classic play looks at both sides of a divisive court case and speaks to the freedoms of thought and expression in a way that is still relevant today. Come support over 25 of Washougal High's young actors and technical staff in a thrilling evening of theatre.

Tickets are only $5 for adults and $4 for students and seniors and take place on February 10, 11, 17, and 18 at 7:00. On February 11, the Senior Grad Night parents will be serving a pasta dinner and hosting a raffle and auction before the show. We'd love to see you there!

Community Input Gathering for Strategic Planning Process

The Washougal School District is in the process of developing a five to six year strategic plan to guide our district and school improvement work. As part of this process, we hope to gather input from a broad range of district constituents through several means. If you are interested in attending a community input session, one will be held in the Washougal High School Library on March 6, 2012 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Community members who are parents can also give input through their school's parent advisory group. Meetings are being held at each school during the month of February to collect parent feedback. To view a list all meetings, please click here.

In addition to these input sessions, a short online survey is available to help guide our work around strategic priorities. You can take the survey by following this link. WHS Student James Maguire wins VFW Voice of Democracy Award for Essay

Congratulations to James Maguire from Washougal High School, who won the District 6 award from the Camas/Washougal Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary. James wrote and submitted an essay in the VFW's Voice of Democracy contest last fall. James was presented an award during a ceremony on January 6th at the Camas Community Center by local VFW members.

WHS Jazz Band Concert Tonight at 7 PM

The Washougal High School Jazz Bands would like to invite you to their winter concert TONIGHT, at 7pm in the Washburn Performing Arts Center (WHS). Cost of admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students/seniors, and free with a Season Arts Pass. The bands have been preparing for the upcoming Clark College Jazz Festival, and they would love to show off their hard work to you! Hope to see you there!

Also, the bands will be competing at Clark on Friday, the 27^th at 9:00 (Jazz II) and 2:20 (Jazz I). The performances will be held in Gaiser Hall.

Felicia Ray Harrison was selected as the Camas Washougal Rotary Scholar of the Month for January 2012. Felicia is a sophomore at Washougal High School, and has a 3.758 GPA. WHS Honors Chemistry teacher Bruce Stanton says “Felicia is a hard worker and a very nice person. Her English teacher Sheila Good says she has “vast potential,” and that “her strength is definitely community service and community involvement.” Social Studies teacher Jim Reed notes that “Felicia is such a kind hearted student” and that she “represents the school in a professional and prideful manner” as part of the Equestrian Team. Principal Aaron Hansen describes Felicia as “always smiling and positive!” Felicia is the daughter of Scott and Tammy Harrison. Congratulations Felicia Ray Harrison!

It’s also an opportunity for your whole family to exercise together while learning about keeping active and making healthy everyday choices. Jump Rope for Heart at Gause Elementary Feb 24, 2012

February is Jump Rope For Heart month. On February 24, Gause students will

participate in Jump Rope For Heart. Jump Rope For Heart is a community

service-learning program of the American Heart Association. Jump Rope For

Heart teaches students the importance of developing heart-healthy habits; that

being physically active can be fun, and that by raising funds to support research

and education they can help save lives across the country and in their

community. Gause Elementary School will qualify for gift certificates for free

physical education equipment based on the amount that our school raises.

Students will qualify for individual thank you gifts based on the donations they

collect. Every student is welcome to participate (donations are not required).

Cape Students Create "New Years" Cards for Military Service Men and Women

Cape Horn-Skye Elementary students created more than 150 beautiful handmade cards for Gorge-area residents serving overseas in the U.S. military. The Happy New Year cards will be sent in January as part of a gift package through the Gorge Heroes Club.

Washougal resident Margie Coursey coordinated the cardmaking project after she heard about the Gorge Heroes Club and its efforts. Coursey gathered donations from friends and purchased supplies, which she delivered to Cape Horn-Skye Principal Mary Lou Woody. Cape Horn-Skye staff worked with students to create the beautiful, individual cards.

Coursey said she was thrilled with the result. “It was really fun,” she said. “You wouldn’t believe how cute the cards are.”

Cape Horn-Skye Elementary staff and students regularly work with Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 122 on events throughout the year, such as canned food drives and essay contests.

“Our community really supports those who have served in the military,” said Principal Mary Lou Woody. “We have many military families and showing our support through partnerships such as this one is an important part of our community,” she said.

We have had a very busy holiday season so far. The Chamber Choir and X-Tet performed at the
Grotto Christmas Festival of Lights on Nov. 30. The X-Tet has been caroling all over the local
area, including several Holiday Bazaars, private parties, and Tree Lighting Ceremonies.

WHS Choir has their Holiday 2011 performance on Tuesday, December 12, 2011 at 7 PM in the Washburn Performing Arts Center.

All choir students were invited to attend the Washougal Tree Lighting on Friday Dec. 9, and we
led caroling with the crowd and performed some of our specialty songs.

The Chamber Choir will tour all Washougal Schools tomorrow to spread some happiness and
cheer. The X-Tet will continue it's caroling season, and wrap it up by singing downtown
Portland at the AMD/Dorenbecher Fundraiser on Monday Dec.19. The Sunshine Division is also
involved, and we have heard that the Mayor of Portland will be there as well. Yay, Washougal!
Thanks to the Stevens Family for setting that up for us.

Stuff the Bus Raises 60,000 Pounds of Food for Local Charities

Washougal School District students from all schools raised around 20,000 pounds of food to support the East County Family Resource Center, part of Children's Home Society, here in Washougal. Camas School District students raised nearly 40,000 pounds of food, and won the competition between the two schools. Congratulations to the Camas students, but the real winners are the local families in need! Thank you to all the generous students, families, and staff who helped make this year's Stuff the Bus event a success. �

For the last three years, Washougal High School has joined Camas High School in a friendly rivalry to see which school can gather the most food and toys for needy families on one day. The East County Family Resource Center of Children's Home Society, Camas Treasure House and other charities that provide food and household supplies to needy families joyfully accepted over 70,000 pounds of goods donated by our communities last December.�

Update: No Early Release for K-5 Schools Today Due to Lock-down

The Washougal School District has had four schools in lockdown since 8:30 a.m. this morning. Hathaway Elementary, Gause Elementary, Washougal High School, and Excelsior High School are all in lockdown and will remain in lockdown until the school district is notified by the authorities that it is safe to release students and staff. We will not be releasing students, even to parents at the regular early release time today, but will be holding them until the lockdown is lifted. The school buses will not be running until the lockdown is lifted. This will affect all schools in the district, including students attending Jemtegaard Middle School, Cape Horn-Skye Elementary and Canyon Creek Middle School. We recognize that this will create a hardship for parents who have been concerned about the safety of their children today. Our highest priority at this time is to assure that we protect our students and staff and we ask that parents remain at home, and out of the areas that the police have secured.

Some Gause Elementary students were still on school buses when the lockdown went into effect this morning. They were transported to the bus garage. Parents whose children are at the bus garage may pick up their child but must have a photo ID and must have filled out the registration card on file at the school. The bus numbers that were routed back to the bus garage are Gause buses: 10, 19, 14, 47, 23, & 25. The bus garage is located at 995 E Street.

Children attending Cape Skye-Horn Elementary, Canyon Creek Middle School, and Jemtegaard Middle School will be held at school if they are transported by school bus. The school buses will not be running to any school until the lockdown is lifted. Parents may pick their children up at Jemtegaard Middle School, Cape Horn-Skye and at Canyon Creek Middle School but the authorities are asking that citizens stay off of the roads that are located in the central area of Washougal.

All students and staff are safe. There have been no incidents at any district school. Please contact our Central Office if you have questions at 954-3000. �

Rotary Scholar of the Month for November: Jared Anderson

Congratulations to Jared Anderson, the Camas Washougal Rotary Scholar of the Month for November 2011. Jared is a sophomore at Washougal High School with a 3.929 GPA taking advanced placement and pre-calculus classes. His Spanish teacher Rochelle Aiton says, "Jared is both a gifted student and musician" and "he is the Vice-President of the Spanish Club." Kelly Ritter, his Band Teacher, says "Jared is a trombone player in Jazz Band I, Pep Band, and Wind Ensemble" and that Jared is "highly committed, a great student leader" and has a positive attitude, always willing to help in class. AP Biology Teacher Linda Miller says "Jared has a great work ethic" and is "keeping on top of his work and is a delight to have in class." Jared is the son of Narren and Clarise Anderson of Washougal. Congratulations Jared!

Wells Fargohas committed $1,000 each to 10 Clark County schools, including Hathaway ElementarySchool in the Washougal School District.

Wells FargoCommunity Bank President CaseyCallinsky, District Manager AmandaDolley and local team bank employees hosted the third annual VancouverPrincipals’ Breakfast earlier this month at a local restaurant. The attendeesincluded Hathaway Elementary Principal Laura Bolt.

The WellsFargo executives handed out $1,000 ceremonial checks to educators, all of whomwork at Washougal, Battle Ground and Vancouver and schools that have a large numberof students from low-income families. It will be up to each principal to decidehow to use the funds.

Callinskyexplained to the group why Wells Fargo is such a strong supporter of education.“You can’t have a thriving company in a struggling community. And education isthe base of a thriving community,” he said.

Dolley stressedhow much Wells Fargo wants to support its local schools both financially and byproviding financial education (through its free, online Hands on Banking program). “We’d like tohelp you in any way, shape or form,” she said. “The hope is that we can buildrelationships so we can help more than just giving you $1,000.”

Dolley alsoasked the educators, many of whom have attended this event in prior years, toshare what they had done with their previous grants. One school used its $1,000Wells Fargo grant last year to create a program to develop good behavior.Another used its grant last year to buy school supplies and backpacks for allof its students. One schoolused its previous grant to help upgrade equipment in every classroom. Anotherput the money in its emergency fund, which it taps whenever a student needsclothes or medications.

Founded in 1852,Wells Fargo has repeatedly been named one of the most generous firms in thenation. Education is one of the primary focus areas of its corporate giving.Wells Fargo employs more than 650 team members in Clark County.

A gifted musician, WHS senior Katelyn Wright plays the euphonium in Wind Ensemble and Pep Band. This talented young woman, one of the best in the region, is extremely committed and never misses a performance of any kind. Katie traveled to France and Spain with the Spanish Club this summer, gaining a much larger view of the world. Katie also plays goalie on the varsity soccer team. Because she pushes herself to excellence in all she pursues, Katie will continue to experience life to the fullest and make a positive impact wherever life’s road takes her.

Madeline Down

Focused, organized, and a skilled time manager, WHS Senior Madeline Down is both an excellent student and an exceptional student leader. As senior class president Maddie demonstrates great communication skills and the ability to get others involved. Setting the example for others, Maddie will quietly come and do whatever is needed to accomplish the task at hand. This highly motivated young woman is also a musician and athlete. Maddie will do great things in her life professionally and within her community. We are very proud of Maddie Down, who she is and who she will become.

Isaac Bischoff

WHS senior Isaac Bischoff is a highly motivated student who excels both academically and socially. Isaac consistently displays responsible leadership skills that make him a positive role model for his peers. Talented, pleasant and hardworking, this young man plays alto sax in the Wind Ensemble and Pep Band. To round out the picture, Isaac is also a great basketball player. We expect Isaac to accomplish the goals he sets for himself in the future.

Rotary Scholar of the Month for October: Erin Locke

Erin Locke was selected as the Camas Washougal Rotary Scholar of the Month for October 2011. Erin is a sophomore at Washougal High School and has a 3.892 GPA. Erin’s Spanish teacher, Brian Eggleston says she “is a student with extraordinary talent in language learning” and adds that she has “a very positive attitude and an eagerness to take part in whatever we do in class.” Biology teacher Pauline Rule says “Erin is outgoing, a hard worker, and a team player.” She is described by Band teacher Kelly Ritter as “an overall fantastic kid” and a “great musician, hard worker, and active in all the arts.” Erin is the daughter of Melvin and Cheryl Locke.

Cape Horn-Skye Families Raise Funds for Veterans

Families at Cape Horn-Skye raised $1,148.67 for American Legion Post #122. The American Legion will use the money to purchase turkeys, potatoes and other staples for area families at Christmas. Masks and poetry created by Excelsior High School students is being featured at Los Dos Mexican Restaurant at 701 E St in Washougal. Students from EHS teacher Ali Miller's classroom created plaster masks as part of a creative writing assignment. The students designed and painted the masks, and then wrote poetry to help interpret or explain their choice in the design.

Guys and Dolls Play at WHS Performing Arts Center Nov 10-12, 18-19, 2011

Make plans to join over 50 of Washougal High School’s talented students and enjoy Guys and Dolls! Frank Loesser’s m1950 Masterpiece was recently voted the most popular American musical of the 20th Century – and with good reason. The story of gamblers, showgirls, and mission workers in 1950 New York has produced so many memorable songs such as “Luck Be a Lady Tonight,” “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat,” and “If I Were a Bell,” along with many others. The play runs November 10-12 and 18-19 at 7:00 and also at 1:00 on the 19th. Tickets are still only $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors and are available at the door. We hope to see you there!

Veterans Day Assemblies Honor Veterans

Washougal School District Students learned about Veterans Day and honored those who have served our country during assemblies on November 10th. At Hathaway Elementary, members of Ms. Hayes' class shared essays they wrote celebrating Veterans Day during their assembly. Fourth grader Scott Lees wrote a piece titled "Americans are Free" and Fifth grader Bayli Gale wrote on the topic "What is an American." Here are their essays:

What is an American?

    An American is a person who acts upon their freedom to work hard and support all beliefs. All Americans are available to freedom of religion, which is part of the first Amendment of our Constitutional Rights. What is religion? Religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose when considered as the creation of superhuman. Our freedom to worship as we please allows an individual to choose a lifestyle that will determine values, beliefs, and ways of life. American families can have the right to choose what is best, and it is a privilege to have this freedom.

    Americans pay taxes because, if you did not know, it goes to our economy wealth. Donate and share because it could be pointed to a good cause. Being in a Democracy, we vote pretty often on how many taxes we pay and what the different taxes are used for.

    What are democrats and republicans? They are two different parties that believe our country should be run differently from one another. A great democrat or republican is a person who does what is best for our country and not best for just that party. “This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in.” – Theodore Roosevelt.

Americans are Free

    I think that Americans are free because we all have differences. We all are both boys and girls with different skin colors. If your skin color is black or white, you should still be treated the same way that everyone else is being treated. You should because everyone has feelings. Both boys and girls can be in the same classroom even if your skin is brown or white or whatever.

    Americans are also free because if you are eighteen or older you can vote for who you want to be the president of the United States. I think that is a great rule because kids don’t really know what they are voting for. This candidate we hope will serve our country and keep us safe. The president gives us a lot of big speeches on how to make our country safer and nicer.

    Americans are free because we can live in whatever city or state we choose. We can have as many people like grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and neighbors visiting our house when we want. You can travel all over the country with your families, go to the fair, to the beach, or to visit other relatives. It is amazing that we can do that stuff. No matter what, Americans will be free forever. Never will Americans not be free.

Festival of Trees Dec 9, 2011

Friday, December 9, from 3-6 PM, the Washougal community is invited to view and bid on decorated trees, wreathes and baskets, with all proceeds going to the Washougal Schools. Local community businesses, non-profit groups, and school staff people have donated the trees and the decorations. The Festival of Trees raised $2,500 for Washougal Schools last year, and we hope to double that amount this year. The decorated trees will be in Washougal Town Square, on the corner of Main Street and Love Street, across from the Hearth Restaurant. �

There will be music and refreshments prior to the annual tree lighting ceremony. Final bids will be taken on Saturday December 10th from 4-4:30 PM, with more entertainment and a visit from Santa Claus! If you have questions, please contact Chuck Carpenter at 360-335-1947.

Free Breakfast Week (November 7 - 11, 2011)

Students at all grade levels in the Washougal School District will have access to breakfast at no charge from November 7-11, 2011. For this week, regardless of the student’s free and reduced status, all schools in the district will offer free breakfast. It is our hope that exposure to the school breakfast program will encourage children who might normally skip breakfast to eat breakfast on a regular basis.

According to studies, the benefits of eating breakfast include:
•    Eating breakfast can help improve math, reading, and standardized test scores.
•    Children who eat breakfast are more likely to behave better in school and get along with their peers than those who do not.
•    Breakfast helps children pay attention, perform problem-solving tasks, and improves memory.
•    Children who eat school breakfast are likely to have fewer absences and incidents of tardiness than those who do not.
•    By eating breakfast, students get more of important nutrients, vitamins and minerals such as calcium, dietary fiber, folate and protein.
•    Studies have shown that children who eat breakfast on a regular basis are less likely to be overweight.
•    Eating breakfast as a child is important for establishing healthy habits for later in life.
•    School Breakfast provides ¼ the recommended amounts of protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A, and vitamin C for the day.�

Stuff the Bus 2011

For the last three years, Washougal High School has joined Camas High School in a friendly rivalry to see which school can gather the most food and toys for needy families on one day. Last year, Camas High beat Washougal High, but the real winners were the families in need who live in Camas and Washougal. The East County Family Resource Center of Children's Home Society, Camas Treasure House and other charities that provide food and household supplies to needy families joyfully accepted over 70,000 pounds of goods donated by our communities last December.

This year, Stuff the Bus will run through December 9. When Washougal High School ASB leaders and students show their community spirit, it is enough to inspire all of us to join this great cause. Community members are invited to drop off non-perishable canned or boxed foods, household supplies and unwrapped toys at any Washougal school. The big yellow bus will be parked in front of Washougal High School all day on 12/9/2011, and this is when the action is the most exciting. The ASB is also accepting cash donations which will be used for purchasing additional food and household supply items throughout the day.

Stuff the Bus is a community project of the Camas-Washougal Business Alliance, and supports local families in need. All goods received benefit local charities right here in Camas and Washougal.

Please Support Washougal School District's students and staff as they try to beat Camas in a rematch of last year's "Stuff the Bus" fundraiser. Bring a donation to any Washougal School, and leave it in the "Stuff the Bus" bins.

Washougal Teachers Learn to Use Google Sites to Create Webpages

Two groups of Washougal educators attended optional, district-sponsored classes on creating web pages using Google Sites on September 22 and 28, 2011. These hands-on classes were co-facilitated by Washougal High School Teachers James Bennett and Rochelle Aiton, with assistance from Director of Technology Les Brown.

Participating teachers were led through the process of creating an account, customizing a main page in Google sites, adding feeds from subpages, integrating a Google Calendar, linking to external sites, and adding attachments via the File Cabinet feature or Google Docs.

Hathaway Teacher Lisa Kaaihue said, " I really appreciated all of the choices and variety of features the Google Sites class offered for developing Web pages. I have used other sites to create web pages and felt this site offered the most diversity of features."

Washougal Teachers Learn to Use Research Databases with Students

A group of Washougal educators attended an optional, district-sponsored class on integrating research databases available from the Fort Vancouver Regional Library (FVRL) into their curriculum on Tuesday, September 20. The project-based, hands-on class was taught by Washougal High School Teacher-Librarian Kim Dillon and Director of Technology Les Brown. Washougal Community Library’s new Community Librarian, Chris Hughey, was introduced at the class and helped provide information about the databases covered as well as other services offered through the public library, including school and classroom visits.

Participating teachers were led through the process of brainstorming a topic, defining search terms, expanding or narrowing a research idea, and then searching and recording results from the following electronic resources: Britannica Online, Britannica Online for Kids, World Book for Kids, CultureGrams, Thinkfinity, and General One File. Access to FVRL’s research databases is free with a public library card. Finally, teachers learned evaluation strategies to help students become critical consumers of information. Feedback received was very positive, and staff members who participated were enthusiastic about the opportunity to share these high quality research databases with students. Cape Horn-Skye Teacher Jocelyn Aldridge said, "My wheels are already turning with ideas for my 2nd graders to use as we begin to learn how to write mini-reports this year. Who knew that all of this information was available, and that it is so easy to access?"

Students Ready for New Year and Ready to Learn

School got off to a great start August 30, 2011. Students and staff alike greeted the new school year with enthusiasm. Superintendent Dawn Tarzian and other district office administrators visited the schools, welcoming 2,976 students to the new school year and making sure things were going smoothly for returning staff.

Monday evening, September 19, 6:30 to 7:30 pm, at Washougal’s Washburn Performing Arts Center, Nancy Potter will be uncovering the benefits and processes of AP (Advanced Placement) courses that are offered in Washougal and Camas’ High Schools and around the world. She will also be clarifying how to determine the number of college credits that are retrievable after taking the AP exam.

Students, parents and interested community members are invited.

Nancy Potter has long been the Western Regional Educational Manager for College Board, the agency that generates the AP program and offers many other resources. Her expertise in this field is renown.

WHS Students Remember 9/11 During Assembly

Washougal High School students participated in two assemblies on Friday, September 9th, 2011 in remembrance of 9/11. Members of the Washougal High School Associated Student Body (ASB) and ASB Advisor Jim Reed helped organize the assemblies which featured student poetry, performances by the WHS Choirs, and a moment of silence to honor the memories of those lost on September 11, 2001.

WHS Freshman and new students: There will be an orientation for you on the first day of school. Note that WHS upper classmen who do not ride the bus may show up at 9:55 AM. If you ride the bus, please report to the commons for an activity. Check the WHS website for details.

For K-5 students, Wednesday August 31 is a 3 hour early release day. Please check the bus route information for drop off times for your students.

There is no school on Friday September 2nd, nor is there school on Monday September 5th for Labor day weekend.

WHS Junior David Choi advances in Washington Aerospace Scholars program

WHS Junior David Choi has advanced into phase 2 of the Washington Aerospace Scholars program. Phase 2 consists of a six day summer residency experience at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. David and other WAS participants will have hands-on engineering experiences involving model rockets, robotic rovers, and will work on a "Mission to Mars" team project.

For WHS Athletes and Parents

Important Information:

Practices for high school sports start in August. Some sports have limited numbers of participants and hold try-outs during the first few days of practice to determine the teams. If you miss the try-outs you will not have an opportunity to join the team later. Cuts are common on these teams as there are typically more athletes turning out than spaces on the teams.
Athletes must pay fees and have all clearance paperwork on file in the athletic office prior to the first practice. Coaches are not authorized to collect paperwork or fees, or to determine if an athlete is cleared. Physicals must be current.

June and July- Most teams are conducting practices, open gyms or workouts. Check the WHS Facilities Use Calendar for dates and times.

Fall coaches will be conducting sport specific parent/player meetings following a short informational program in the gym.

August 17^th- First day of Football practice. This includes 9^th graders! You must participate in 12 practices to play in your first game which is on September 2^nd. There are only 14 practice dates prior to the first game!

August 22^nd- First day of practice for all other Fall Sports. Except for Football, all other athletes must participate in 10 practices to play in their first game.

Clausen Youth Program allows students to explore the Gorge

Washougal School District middle school students had the opportunity to participate in the Clausen Youth Program, a two-day outdoor themed program focusing on history, stewardship, and plant & animal identification in the Columbia Gorge. The program is a partnership between Washougal School District and the Friends of the Columbia Gorge and allows students to experience the Gorge in a new way, aligned with state standards. “The Gorge is such a wonderful resource in our own back yard and we feel so grateful to the Friends of the Columbia Gorge for giving our students a chance to experience it in a meaningful and educational way,” said Assistant Superintendent Rebecca Miner.

The Clausen Youth Fund was established in 2008 by long-time supporter and Vancouver resident Phyllis Clausen in honor of her late-husband. With a strong environmental background, Phyllis saw the need to provide an environmental education experience.

The goal of the program is to expose local youth to the wonders of the Columbia Gorge, its significance as a national treasure, and story of its preservation through the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Act.

Spring sports wrap up

Spring sports concluded with great performances and some new school records. It’s been 14 years since Washougal had a individual State Champion in Track and Field, but the fantastic senior duo of Dylan Croeni and Brendan Casey continued to leave their mark of excellence on the season and the record books, as each brought home State Championships in 2011. Dylan got things started with a State Best, and new School Record time of 9:23.61 in the 3200M. He followed that up with a 4^th place finish in the 1600M. Brendan chucked the Javelin 177’ 8”, a new personal best, to place 2^nd. He followed that up with a vault of 14’ 6” to take home the State Championship in the Pole Vault. The points earned by Brendan and Dylan were enough to place 5^th as a team, one point behind Cheney. Also competing for the boys team were Sean Eustis and Isaac Bischoff.

The girls team had two representatives competing in three events at the State Meet. Kelley Young competed in the 100 and 300 Hurdles, bringing home a 5^th place medal in the 100 Hurdles. Kelley broke the school record that she set as a junior three times this season. It now stands at 15.44, the time that she ran at district to qualify for the State Meet. Also competing for the girls team was Kaitlyn Johnson in the 100M.

Another stellar performance was turned in at the State Tennis Tournament by Bolivian foreign exchange student Niko Lima-Severich. Niko finished 3^rd in the singles competition after losing a well-played and exciting match to the eventual state champ in the semi-finals. The girls doubles team of Shelby DeLong and Allie Reeves played well and made the medal round placing 8^th. Also competing for the boys was the doubles team of Patrick McCarthy and Ian Cagle.

Two boys advanced to the State Golf Tournament. Connor O’Neill made the cut after the first round and finished in a tie for 14^th place. Beau Scott also represented the Panthers but did not advance to the second round.

Several students set school records this spring…Brendan Casey set a new school record in the Pole Vault with a vault of 15’ 3”. Dylan Croeni set new school record marks in the 1600M (4:23.21) and the 3200M (9:25.20). Katelyn Wright broke the school High Jump record that she had shared with Roxie Niedert of 5’ 3”, with an incredible jump of 5’ 4”.

Washougal Public School Employees Union Awards Scholarship

Washougal High School Senior Kelley Young is the recipient of this year's Washougal Public Employees/Len Bottemiller $1,000 scholarship. Kelley is the daughter of PSE member Lisa Young. Applicants for the scholarship completed an application including an essay and personal statement on the value of education. Congratulations Kelley!

Rotary Scholarship Winners 2010-2011

The Camas Washougal Rotary awarded their annual scholarships to students in the Camas and Washougal School Districts during a regular meeting on Thursday June 2nd. Pictured are Rotary Club President Lindsey Korell, who presented the awards, and Washougal High School students Brian Price, Darcy Akers, Patrick McCarthy, and Cassaundra Helland. Each student received $1,000 scholarships toward their higher education expenses. Four students from Camas High School were also awarded scholarships.

To qualify, the students filled out an official Rotary application and wrote an essay based on the Rotary principle of 'Service Above Self' and what that means to them. The selections were based on the student's essay and other submitted criteria. Rotarian Liz Stiles headed up the Scholarship Committee, and said "It's amazing what a group of bright, college-bound students we have in our two school districts."

Funds from the Camas Washougal Rotary Club's fundraising efforts, such as proceeds from Ducky Derby ticket sales during Camas Days, serve as the source for the local scholarship fund. The students and members of their families were present, as well as representatives from each respective school district.

Kari Johnson has won the $500 Camas Washougal Rotary Scholarship for Sophomores for the 2010-2011 school year. Kari is a sophomore at Washougal High School and has a 3.97 GPA. She is the daughter of Eldon and Laurie Johnson. Kari's Honors Chemistry teacher, Bruce Stanton, says that she is "a consistently great student." Kelly Ritter, Kari's Band teacher, notes that "she was the only Freshman in Jazz Band 1 last year," and describes her as "pleasant, always respectful, hardworking, and involved in lots of other activities." Other teachers describe Kari as the picture of quiet diligence, and able to demonstrate her understanding of concepts when called on in class. Congratulations, Kari Johnson!

Dear Staff,

Our work this spring has played out against the grim backdrop of the worst budget scenario that the education community has seen in many years. Even as I write this message, the full impact of the state's economic downturn on next year's education budget is unknown.

In spite of the economy, there are still 3k students in Washougal who at summer's end will stream into our classrooms, ready for school and all that it means to them. Our district and our staff will be as prepared as any district in the state to meet, greet and teach these students. We will be as prepared as any district in the state to fulfill the promise of a quality education for every student who enrolls in Washougal schools. This reality is the bright spot in a gloomy economic forecast.

Like all districts, Washougal is not without its challenges. We continue to face the tough challenge of increasing the percentage of students meeting those high academic standards in reading, writing, mathematics and science. As the budget is prepared over the next few weeks, resources for teaching and learning remain a top priority. Superintendent Dawn Tarzian is grounded in the core mission of supporting academic growth and greater achievement for all students. Rebecca Miner, assistant superintendent, is planning a curriculum budget for next year that can be used to advance the district's work in curriculum, instruction and assessment. Les Brown, technology director, is preparing a continuum of technology classes designed to enhance instruction and learning. Doug Bright, human resources director, is communicating regularly and often with WAE and PSE leaders regarding the unfolding budget picture, and the Board of Directors is committed to a balanced budget that protects the community's investment in schools known for quality learning and safe environments. All of these forces are working together to ensure the best possible outcome with respect to the allocation of scarce resources in support of the district's core mission, raising the achievement of all students.

As I waltz out the door in July, I have to leave a few philosophical thoughts in my wake, ideas I have perfected by watching highly effective instructional practice and teachers in Washougal classrooms. I challenge you to find yourself in these images of classroom best practice:

1) There is no substitute for a great teacher who knows how to connect students to important ideas, concepts and skills.

2) Learning occurs at the intersection of two best practices: 1) Active, engaging opportunities to read, write, discuss, investigate and explore, and 2) The opportunity to construct and demonstrate or present (individually or in groups) an understanding of complex ideas and concepts. In this process, students need to gain proficiency in the use of technology and traditional learning tools.

3) Interdisciplinary instruction, small-group instruction, advanced placement classes, student choice, community service opportunities, career and technical education courses, alternative learning options (Excelsior), and real-world applications/simulations provide effective means of scaffolding student expertise in increasingly complex knowledge and skills.

4) A student’s incentive to vigorously pursue knowledge springs from a growing level of competence. To insure momentous gains in achievement over time, students should be able to excel or be re-taught at any point along their continuum of learning.

5) Creativity in all aspects of learning, and more specifically in the arts, builds excitement for learning. Public performances by students enhance learning and build community spirit by showcasing and highlighting achievement that is unique and of value in our culture and our programs.

5) Sports, clubs, academic teams and other extra-curricular activities build student confidence, expand upon student talents and interests, teach teamwork and sportsmanship and may provide the foundation for life-long leisure activities.

6) Schools are communities of educational practice and staff must take advantage of time to work together and perfect their practice, as exemplified in the Professional Learning Communities best practice model.

Remember that at the end of the day, we are preparing students for life, higher education and work as citizens of a global economy in the 21st Century. It has been a blessing to work here. I wish you all the best!

Zechariah Friedrich was selected as the Camas Washougal Rotary Scholar of the Month for May 2011. Zechariah is a sophomore at Washougal High School, and has a 3.85 GPA. WHS Spanish teacher Rochelle Aiton says “Zechariah Friedrich is a well-rounded, intelligent and diligent student. He consistently achieves excellence in his work and in his relationships with other students. He has been a pleasure to have in class this year and I look forward to seeing what the future brings him.”

His Math teacher, Karen Wysaske, describes him as “a positive and polite young man” noting that he “uses his class time wisely and helps others without being asked.” WHS Soccer coach Charlie Boyce says Zechariah is a coaches dream; he has great attitude and is a tremendous teammate! Spring Sports Update

The most formidable opponent that the Washougal High School sports teams have faced this spring is the weather. There are no “game plans” or “strategies” that our coaches can come up with to defeat Mother Nature. Regardless, the Panther teams found a way to preserver through it all and have shown consistent, and in some cases dramatic, improvement as the skies have given us a bit of a break in these final weeks.

The baseball and softball teams slogged through the early weeks by playing every game on the road. Both teams seemed to be reaching their potential as they got outside to practice late in the season, but both failed to place high enough to extend their season into the District play-offs.

The WHS Boys Soccer team finished the regular season in third place in the Greater Saint Helens League. In the District Tournament the Panthers were defeated by Centralia in the first round, but bounced back to defeat W.F. West High School of Chehalis in a penalty kick shootout here at Fishback Stadium three days later. The Boys Soccer season ended with a defeat at the hands of Aberdeen on the road on May 12th in the 3rd round.

The Girls Golf team competes in the District Tournament this week. Coach Allen indicates that the players have been showing consistent improvement and is hopeful that we might send a player or two to State, which is coming up on May 24th and 25th.

The Tennis team had a productive season despite several weather related delays and a couple of soggy matches. The doubles team of Alexandra Reeves and Shelby DeLong have advanced to the District tournament on May 20th and 21st. Congratulations and Good Luck!

The boys and girls Track and Field teams have continued to shine brightly through the dark and dreary rain this spring. The Sub-District Meet concluded last Friday with 20 Panther athletes qualifying for the District Meet in Longview on May 20th. Highlights from the Sub-District meet include school record performances by Brendan Casey who went 15’ 3” in the Pole Vault, and Kelley Young who ran 15.64 in the 100M Hurdles. The State Meet is the next goal for the Panther Track athletes. They must finish in the top three at District to qualify for the meet on May 26th, 27th, and 28th.

Washougal students compete in Clark County culinary event

Washougal High School students rolled up their sleeves and prepped their saucepans Saturday, May 7 for the Third Annual Clark County High School Culinary Competition. WHS students competed against their peers from Battle Ground, Prairie, Camas and Woodland high schools at the event, which was sponsored by Sodexo, who provides food services for all five high schools.

Washougal students took two awards: the Food Critics Choice and Best Overall Award for teamwork, presentation and taste.

Students had three hours to prepare a main dish, side dish and to create a salad and dressing from ingredients they were given. They were also given a mystery ingredient to add somewhere in their meal.

The students’ winning dish was a French Cassoulet of Kielbasa, simmered and baked with white beans, tomatoes, apples, rosemary and sage. Their side dish was asparagus with puff pastry covered in a béchamel sauce.

Washougal’s team was coached by Mary Walker, who teaches the Family and Consumer Science class at WHS.

Students who competed are: seniors Nick Green, Peter Tkach, Kyle Taisacan, and Blair Kraft.

EHS Student Wins Community Contest

A Washougal student attending Excelsior High School is the winner of Clark Public Utilities’ Stream Team 2011 Watershed Reflections Contest.

Travis Hibbs is a junior at Excelsior High School in Washougal School District. His photograph was selected as the winner for the 9-12th grade category in visual arts.

This year’s theme was "We all live in a Watershed". Teacher Trudy Tkach incorporated the watershed project into her botany class. Students could choose to write a poem or short story, take a photograph or paint a picture.

“It was great to see a student take interest in learning more about the local watersheds and Travis made an effort to go above and beyond the expectations of the assignment. We are all very proud of him,” said Tkach.

Travis and other winners were announced at Clark Public Utilities’ Earth Day celebration April 23.

Cape and CCMS awarded Green Certification Level 1

Cape Horn-Skye Elementary and Canyon Creek Middle School were recently awarded Level 1 certification by the Washington Green Schools Team.

To fulfill the requirements for Level 1, students and staff have worked hard to conserve energy by turning off lights when they leave the rooms; closing the blinds at night; and turning off computers, projectors, and other electrical devices before they leave for the day. They also have implemented a successful composting program using the food scraps from lunches.

WHS student selected to study in Germany next year

Washougal High School is proud to announce that sophomore Eidelynn Stagg has won the prestigious Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange scholarship. This all-expenses paid, full academic year stay in Germany is funded by both the United States and Germany. Her trip begins in July with a one-week stay in Washington D.C. Upon her arrival in Germany, Eidelynn will attend a four-week, intensive immersion program of language study. After meeting her permanent host family, Eidelynn will attend the Gymnasium in her city which is the prep school for university students in Germany. Eidelynn is one of only 250 students selected throughout the United States.

Although applicants without formal language training may apply, Eidelynn feels that her two- year- long study of the German language at Washougal High School allowed her to show her commitment to and love for the study of other cultures. Not only will Eidelynn have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding for one of the United States’ most important business and political partners, she will be a great representative for our state and country.

WHS German teacher Susan Lewallen calls the program an amazing opportunity for high school students. "Because only 250 students are selected throughout the U.S. each year, it's noteworthy that WHS has sent a representative nearly every year since the program began in 1983," said Lewallen. "WHS students consistently grow and succeed through this program and Eidelynn's two years of German instruction will be a tremendous asset to her during her stay," said Lewallen, who has been the German language teacher at WHS for 29 years.

Penny is a fourth grade teacher at Cape Horn-Skye Elementary School. She has been a teacher in the district for seven years and has her National Board Certification.

Kelly’s Business teacher, Lisa Leonard, says Kelly “is a kind student others often look up to” and adds that she “can count on Kelly to pay attention to detail, listen to instructions and ask intelligent questions.”

During Spring Break, the WHS Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band I, and Chamber Choir traveled to Anaheim, CA and competed in the Heritage Music Festival. This festival was attended by bands and choirs from all over the country and Canada. Our students did an exceptional job, bringing home several awards. Both the Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble placed 1^st in their categories, and the Chamber Choir placed 2^nd. The three groups also received the top award, the Festival Sweepstakes Award, given to the school with the highest combined score. Alto saxophonist Aleks Arzhanov received the Maestro’s Award, given to the outstanding soloist.

We are incredibly proud of the performance of our students, and the manner in which they conducted themselves during the entire trip. They did an outstanding job of representing Washougal High School. Congratulations to the bands and choir!

Washougal School Board Selects Oregon Administrator as Superintendent of Schools

The Washougal School District Board of Directors has selected Corvallis School District Superintendent Dawn Tarzian as its next Superintendent of Schools. Tarzian will begin work July 1, succeeding Teresa Baldwin who retires in June.

One of four finalists in an extensive search process, Tarzian has served as Superintendent of Corvallis School District in Corvallis, Oregon, since 2005. Prior to that she served as Assistant Superintendent and Director of Teaching and Learning for the school district. Prior to becoming an administrator in Corvallis, Tarzian served as Director of Student Services for Linn Benton Lincoln ESD, Principal for Greater Albany School District in Albany, Oregon, and Principal in Falls City School District in Falls City, Oregon. Tarzian earned her Bachelor's Degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and her Master's in Education from the University of Oregon. She holds an Oregon administrator’s license.

Tarzian and the other three finalists visited Washougal School District on March 25 to tour schools, meet district staff, students and community members and interview with the Board of Directors.

"I am honored by the opportunity to become the superintendent of the Washougal School District," said Tarzian. "The reputation of the district is one of quality and of a place where caring staff challenge students to meet high expectations. Through the application process, I had the opportunity to meet students, staff, parents and community members up close. In addition to academic achievement, I saw a commitment to the whole child – developing healthy, engaged citizens who are applying what they learn in the classroom to their community and the world beyond. I am very impressed and excited that I soon will be a part of the Washougal community. I believe that I will be able to support and enhance the vision and goals that have been set for learning and student development."

"The Board was very fortunate in having extremely qualified applicants," said Board President Blaine Peterson. "That presented us with a very difficult problem, but after much discussion and deliberation we feel we have an excellent new superintendent to help our students reach their full potential. We appreciate all Teresa has done for our district and look forward to continuing the growth and improvements we have been experiencing in our district."

Lacamas Community Credit Union Donates $3,000 to Washougal High School

Team Mean Machine Wins Again!

At the Portland Robotics Competition Friday and Saturday (3/25 & 3/26), Team 2471 once again demonstrated their superior work ethic, determination, team unity and gracious professionalism. Mohit Abraham, who has been instrumental in the development of this team the last four years, recently shared with the team, "When people hear Team 2471 or Team Mean Machine they know the team consists of amazing students who get the job done and are always willing to help support others succeed as well." Team 2471 has competed well in the past in both the Seattle and Portland competitions, but wasn't able to qualify for "The Big Dance". However, this year, after winning BOTH regionals, they certainly deserve to be in St. Louis with the best of the best.

Cape Horn-Skye Students Competing in "Math is Cool" Competition

Two teams of Cape Horn-Skye 5th graders competed in the "Math is Cool" competition on March 18 at Fort Vancouver High School. Events included mental math, math relays, group multiple choice, knowledge bowl and an individual competition. Students prepared for the competition by practicing after school on Thursday afternoons throughout February and March with fourth grade teacher Penny Andrews. At the competition, Matthew Norvel placed 6th in the individual portion.

Robotics Team takes First in Regionals

The FIRST Robotics Team 2471 (Team Mean Machine) composed of students from Washougal, Camas, Hockinson and Hayes Freedom did an absolutely amazing thing this weekend. They dominated over 100 teams on their way to winning the regional competition.

They won eight of nine matches during the preliminary rounds which left them ranked 1st. During the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals they held strong to become the Seattle Regional Champions. As a result of winning the regional competition, Team 2471 has qualified the World Championships in St. Louis the last weekend of April. Before that, however, they have one more competition this weekend at the Portland Regional Competition. Team 2471 was also awarded by the judges the Industrial Design for Engineering Award sponsored by General Motors which "celebrates form and function in an efficiently designed machine that effectively achieves the game challenge."

Team 2471 or Team Mean Machine has improved each year over the last four years. The very first year, Team Mean Machine was a CHS team only. The second year, four WHS students joined the team. This year the team was made up of Washougal High Students Patrick McCarthy, TJ Houze, Anna Kellogg, Jarred Freeman, Carolin Scheibel, Jacob Wright, and Riley Taylor joined Romney Kellogg from Canyon Creek Middle School along with students from Camas High, Hockinson and Hayes Freedom School. Along with the students, are the mentors. Team 2471 has absolutely incredible mentors. The dedication, hard work and long, long hours by the mentors and students is commendable and paid off. Congratulations to this year's regional robotics champions!

Two Washougal School District teachers earn National Board Certification

Washougal School District teachers Bryn Scamahorn, Cape Horn-Skye Elementary School, and Heather Carver, Washougal High School, earned National Board certification this school year.

Certification requires the candidate to be affiliated with a local university or an approved service provider for a lengthy study of advanced teaching strategies and the collection of classroom evidence demonstrating the candidate’s acquisition of research-based instructional skills. To be certified, the candidate submits for review an extensive portfolio of written work, including videotapes and candidate’s own analysis of his/her own classroom teaching against research-based standards of pedagogy. Finally, the candidate must take a proctored written examination in their endorsed content field. A national panel of peers then uses the certification standards to assess the candidate’s portfolio and written examination results. Candidates are known to complete the process in a year, but it may take as long as three years to acquire certification.

Both Scamahorn and Carver completed their National Boards in spring 2010 and received certification in November.
When asked why she decided to pursue National Board Certification, Scamahorn answers, “I felt that as a music teacher with my master's degree, it offered me the best opportunity to further my music education skills through specific music pedagogy, reflection, and skill building.”

Both Scamahorn and Carver described the process as a challenging one.

“The process was difficult in how revealing and confronting it was,” said Scamahorn. “Through the processes of reflection and video taping, I was able to see the good, and the weaker practices in my own teaching. Since going through the process, I have spent more time in reflection and planning guiding my teaching. It has made me a stronger teacher exponentially,” said Scamahorn.

WHS teacher Heather Carver calls the process a “thorough” one, which “focused on major analysis of teaching practices, the impetus behind the classroom action, and also analysis of results to better adjust teaching in the classroom.”

“It reminded me of coaching athletes and breaking down the skills,” said Carver, who also coaches at WHS.

“Through the process, I looked carefully at what I do in the classroom and questioned why I do it,” said Carver. “I looked at different ways and angles to teach a concept to diverse learners, and I also looked at numerous ways to bring diversity into the classroom. The process requires you to analyze your current practices. The fantastic byproduct of this reflection and self-analysis is indeed adjustment and improvement, which is how the process improves teaching skills.”

“I am extremely proud of the work that I have done for the program,” said Carver. “I look forward to continually trying to improve and hone my skills in and out of the classroom, and I am proud of Washougal School District for their support of the National Boards.”

WHS hosted the 2011 Clark County ASL Competition Wednesday, March 3, 2011 in the Gordon Washburn Performing Art Center. This was an outstanding event and we want to thank all of the schools that participated as well as all of supporters in the audience.

Gause Elementary Hosts Family Fitness Night

Gause Elementary School and the Gause Parent Boosters hosted its first Family Fitness Night on February 15, 2011. More than 300 attendees (students, parents, and staff) came together to learn the importance of fitness and nutrition. There were five exercise stations that focused on cardio respiratory endurance, upper body strength, abdominal strength, flexibility, and agility. Families spent ten minutes at each station, which were run by school staff and parent volunteers. Brooke Churchman, the school’s nurse, hosted a nutrition station in the cafeteria that focused on the food pyramid and making healthy meal choices.

“The goal of Family Fitness Night was to get families moving, and to do it in a fun way, with many of the exercises that could be easily replicated at home”, said Mark Bauer, Gause Elementary School Physical Education Specialist, who hosted the event.
“With childhood obesity rising, I also wanted to show what our physical education program is doing to help combat this growing epidemic,” Bauer stated.

In addition, the Washington State Health Care Authority hosted a booth where they passed out information regarding changes in state-sponsored health care.

The evening concluded with a parents versus students game of “Ultimate Energy Ball”, which is similar to dodge ball, but students learn about the following energy sources: carbohydrates, protein, and fat. The concept for the Family Fitness Night came from the Box Tops for Education program, which provided sports balls and other fitness equipment to be given away as prizes.

Rotary Scholar of the Month for February: Ellie Boon

Elizabeth "Ellie" Boon was selected as the Camas Washougal Rotary Scholar of the Month for February 2011. Ellie is a sophomore at Washougal High School and has an impressive 3.933 GPA. Ellie's World Geography teacher Scott Boothby describes Ellie as an "absolute pleasure to have in class" and says that she "raised the standard in the class and was a leader others attempted to follow." Stephanie Watts, Ellie's PE teacher, describes her as a wonderful asset to WHS, noting that she "always has a smile on her face, a jump in her step, and a fun story to share." She has been honored for two years in a row with her selection for the First Team All-State Girls Soccer Team. Ellie has excellent time management skills, juggling her studies and her commitment to soccer, and is an excellent student.

WHS Senior Ryan Erdwins and Coach Carver Honored

Senior Ryan Erdwins and Coach John Carver were honored at the 19th annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet sponsored by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Clark County Branch

Ryan Erdwins was one of 29 local high school senior football players who were honored for their success in the classroom and community along with success on the football field. Each football player not only had to excel on the field, but also had to have at least a 3.0 GPA and be both leaders in their high schools and community.

The NFF also gave out the John Hadley Award to long time Washougal football assistant coach and WHS teacher Dr. John Carver. The Hadley Award is given out to an assistant coach who has shown loyalty, been a positive influence on young people, and an integral part of the success of their football program.

"Harvey" at WHS, Feburary 10th - 12th

“Harvey,”, Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, is coming to WHS and you are invited to be a part of the fun. Join Elwood P. Dowd and his best friend Harvey, an invisible 6-foot-tall rabbit, in a play that has been described as “just about perfect.” The show runs in the Washburn Auditorium at WHS from February 10 through the 12th at 7:00 pm with a matinee on the 12th at 1:00 pm. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors and are available at the door. The students would love to see you there!

Longtime board members honored

Retiring Board members Orlan Gessford and Tom Huffman were recognized at the January 25 Board Meeting, which coincided with National School Board Month. Staff and community showed their appreciation for the retiring board members with a reception before the regular board meeting began. Former superintendents Brent Garrett and Bob Donaldson and former assistant superintendent Phil Rohn were all in attendance to pay tribute to the hard work and dedication of the board.

Orlan has served on the board since 1984 and Tom has served since 1991. Fellow Board Members expressed their appreciation and respect for the two "board historians" who served countless hours for Washougal School District. "There is no training for school board members," said Board President Blaine Peterson. "These two gentlemen have been an invaluable resource to me and to others on the board. They will be missed."

Rotary Scholar of the Month for January: Kari Johnson

Kari Johnson was selected as the Camas Washougal Rotary Scholar of the Month for January 2011. Kari's Honors Chemistry teacher, Bruce Stanton, says that she is "a consistently great student." Kelly Ritter, Kari's Band teacher, notes that "she was the only Freshman in Jazz Band 1 last year," and describes her as "pleasant, always respectful, hardworking, and involved in lots of other activities." Other teachers describe Kari as the picture of quiet diligence, and able to demonstrate her understanding of concepts when called on in class. Kari has a 3.97 GPA. Congratulations, Kari Johnson!

Rotary Scholar of the Month for December: Timmethy Tran

Timmethy Tran was selected as the Camas Washougal Rotary Scholar of the Month for December 2010. Timmethy's biology teacher, Linda Miller, says that he is "a hard worker, applying himself and his abilities and not afraid to take a risk academically challenging himself taking AP Biology as a sophomore." Other teachers describe Timmethy as a well rounded individual, noting that he's been taking very challenging courses as well as participating in football, wrestling, and track. Sheila Good, Timmethy's Advanced English teacher, describes him saying he is "one of my best students!" Timmethy is a hard working student and very respectful to teachers and his friends. Timmethy has a 3.9 GPA. Congratulations, Timmethy Tran!

Help Stuff the Bus December 10, 2010

For the last two years, Washougal High School has joined Camas High School in a friendly rivalry to see which school can gather the most food and toys for needy families on one day. Last year, Washougal High beat Camas High, but the real winners were the families in need who live in Camas and Washougal. The East County Family Resource Center of Children's Home Society, Camas Treasure House and other charities that provide food and household supplies to needy families joyfully accepted over 70,000 lbs of goods donated by our communities last December.

This year, Stuff the Bus will happen on December 10. When Washougal High School ASB leaders and students show their community spirit, it is enough to inspire all of us to join this great cause. Community members are invited to drop off non-perishable canned or boxed foods, household supplies and unwrapped toys at any Washougal school. The big yellow bus will be parked in front of Washougal High School all day, and this is where the action is the most exciting. The ASB is also accepting cash donations which will be used for purchasing additional food and household supply items throughout the day.

Tonight, Wednesday December 8, 2010, the WHS ASB students will be at McDonalds from 4:00pm-7:00pm collecting donations

Thursday December 9^th- the Stuff the Bus team will be at the wrestling match at WHS from 5:30-8:00. And the Camas/Washougal Grocery Outlet from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Friday December 10th- The Stuff the Bus Team will be at Pioneer Square promoting stuff the bus from 6:00am-7:00am, then at WHS all day collecting donations.

Please join us for a post-Stuff the Bus party at Exterior Wood from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Stuff the Bus is a program that was created by the Camas Washougal Business Alliance (CWBA). The CWBA is made up of local business owners who strive to have a positive impact on the well-being of the community. The CWBA invites the public to attend the official weigh-in of the buses at 5:00 p.m. on December 10, at Exterior Wood in Washougal. Parking is available in the BiMart parking lot across the street. There will be refreshments as well as a band, and Santa may even stop in for a surprise visit! Many thanks to the CWBA, to district staff and to community members who will help Washougal High win that beautiful Stuff the Bus trophy one more time!

Long-time Board members retire

Washougal School District board members Dr. Orlan Gessford and Tom Huffman have announced their retirement effective January 31, 2011. Dr. Gessford was appointed to the Board in 1984, and elected to his position in 1985. Tom Huffman, a graduate of Washougal High School, was elected to the Board in 1991. Both have grown children who are graduates of Washougal High.

Superintendent Teresa Baldwin says she has appreciated Dr. Orlan Gessford’s leadership for finance on the board, as well as his advocacy for disadvantaged children, both of which are important functions on the board of directors. She talks about Tom Huffman’s influence on teaching and learning, both as an advocate of academic rigor and advanced placement courses, as well as his vision for a strong career and technical education curriculum aligned with the Clark County Skills Center program.

Bob Donaldson and Phil Rohn, past superintendent and associate superintendent, felt that the policy-level thinking led by Tom Huffman and Orlan Gessford, specifically the concept of a culminating student performance judged against a standard of excellence, was ground-breaking at the time and well ahead of the state requirement for graduation. They also noted the tremendous leadership shown by these two board members when, as a result of a voter-approved school bond in 1999, the district's facilities were modernized. Donaldson said, "The knowledge that Tom and Orlan had of construction management, county codes and labor laws proved to be extremely helpful during that time of district facility reconstruction."

Former superintendent Brent Garrett also recalled that both of these board members were strong proponents of the first “Senior Project” requirement for graduation at Washougal High School. Mr. Garrett noted that there are school directors who “sit” on boards and those who “serve,” and he remembers both Dr. Gessford and Mr. Huffman as directors who have served and have made significant contributions to the students and community. Mr. Garrett said, “Tom and Orlan will be replaced, but our memory of what they have accomplished will remain a beacon for those filling their shoes. They have truly served!”

Teresa Baldwin said, “Tom and Orlan have been at the helm with a calm, steady hand, helping to chart the course of this district for many years. Their knowledgeable, experienced commitment is exceptional. Individually and together, they are leaving a legacy of leadership in Washougal School District.” Dr. Orlan Gessford and Tom Huffman will be honored as recipients of the 2011 Community Leadership Award at a reception in May next year, presented by the Washington Association of School Administrators.

Blaine Peterson, current president of the Washougal Board of Directors, announced that the board will be seeking applicants to fill these two vacancies. Information will be posted on the district website in December.

Rotary Scholar of the Month - Joseph Harris III

Joseph Harris III was selected as the Camas Washougal Rotary Scholar of the Month for November 2010. Joseph's Band Teacher, Kelly Ritter, said that "Joe is in Symphonic Band and Pep band. He plays the French horn in Symphonic, and piccolo in Pep. " He plays a different instrument in each, which shows how talented and hard-working he is. Anthony has a 3.6 GPA, and is active in Student Leadership, cheer squad, and is taking Advanced Placement courses as a Sophomore. According to WHS Counselor Christina Mackey, Joe takes his academics very seriously, and has chosen rigorous courses for his 10th grade year. Congratulations, Joseph Harris III!

WHS Students Win Grant to Buy Books for School Library

Congratulations to the WHS Readers Club and the WHS Library who are the recipients of a $1,000 Creative Classroom grant from the Washougal Schools Foundation due to the initiative of Junior Kristan Poissonnier and a team of Readers Club Officers, including Seniors Troy McConnaughey, Rickie Ludlow, Stacy Bradley, Andrea Miller, and Sophomore Cameron Holmes. The students initiated the proposal independently and collectively wrote the Books ‘R’ Us Washougal High grant, enabling students to help select and purchase library books.

In August, Kristan and her Readers Club peers were excited about seeing each other and were looking forward to a year of new books to read, but when she found out that the budget restrictions in the school district impacted the library, she took matters into her own hands, investigating alternate ways to raise money for library resources.

“I talked to principals and staff and found out about the Washougal Schools Foundation grants,” said Kristan. “I was in the library talking about the grant and library volunteer Boyd Hemminger was listening. It turned out that he was on the grant committee. He got me an application to fill out, and he got me all the rules and regulations I had to abide by. Then I took off from there.”

To demonstrate the need for the grant, Kristan and her team talked about budget cuts which have reduced the library's budget for adding books, saying “There is no money to support adding new literature to the library.” The grant writers further addressed how the grant would actively involve students while on their annual field trip to Powell’s City of Books in Portland, where the Reader Club members typically select new and gently used books for the school library, with the approval of Washougal High School Teacher/Librarian Kim Dillon.

The grant stated:

“We plan on purchasing a variety of genres - biographies, manga, and fiction. Selecting different genres such as biographies and autobiographies will allow the students to see and experience other people’s lives. Fiction will let the reader relax and enjoy a good book about a mythological being and make them use their imagination to picture these stories. Manga is designed to encourage children to talk about something such as the art of anime. The artwork didn’t come out of thin air someone had to draw the pictures. So even in the smallest of things, that we can’t possibly imagine, there is an educational benefit.”

Girls Soccer Semifinal tonight at WHS

Our fabulous Girls Soccer Team will host Mark Morris tonight in a consolation round semifinal at 6:00, at Fishback Stadium. The winner of tonight's match will play Saturday to determine the 3rd and final District IV representative in the Sate Tournament Bracket.

Our girls are playing well, and have never before advanced this far into the post season.

Please come and support their efforts to reach the State Soccer Tournament for the first time in school history.

Admission is $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for students with an ASB.
